The railroad industry has, historically, rejected any electronic device designed to monitor the operation of the final drives, as adding sensors and associated wiring under harsh operating conditions, would inevitably create new operational and maintenance problems which is monitoring system itself. In rail gear applications, such devices would inevitably require frequent repairs due to cable damage from accidental mechanical damages induced by flying ballast, and vegetation occasionally present under the bogies. As a result, the rail industry does not presently rely on any final drive condition monitoring technology. Instead, almost the entire fleet globally, rely on unnecessarily frequent, precautionary and expensive gearbox overhauls.
