Drive Chain Dynamic Load Measurements

The client required the measurement of primary drive chain dynamic loads (in the tight, slack and cam-to-cam strands) for a running engine at a range of engine speeds and load conditions. The project covered installation of all required instrumentation together with data collection during engine dynamometer tests, analysis and reporting of the dynamic chain load results. The design, development, manufacture and calibration of modified components was also included in the scope of this work.

Transmission Dynamics proposed that the free-issue camshaft drive sprocket assemblies should be modified and instrumented to measure X and Y loads in the rotating frame of reference.

The use of a once-per-rev marker was used to enable the rotating signals to be resolved into a stationary frame of reference – and hence enable the calculation of dynamic chain loads.
