Following previous work to successfully develop and manufacture a wireless load transducer into an existing chain connector, one of our clients requested Transmission Dynamics to supply three additional units using the latest Bluetooth modules integrated into 42 mm connectors (plus one connector modified but with no electronics, for destructive strength tests).
The instrumented conveyor chain links were calibrated to 80 tonnes in steps of 10 tons. The dummy link was put through two destructive tests, and in both cases, the chain links applying the load failed under brittle fracture before the modified link was affected [2501 kN and 2720 kN]. As the proofing load of this type of connector is typically 1600 kN, with an ultimate tensile strength of 2500 kN, it was safe to assume that the strength of the connecting link was not compromised by the presence of the machined electronics pockets.
The instrumented conveyor links are successfully operating in an underground mine [Australia] in one of the most demanding of environments.
